    • Arrest warrant issued for Jets’ Anderson
Arrest warrant issued for Jets’ AndersonMay 3, 2018— The Sports Xchange — A warrant has been issued for the arrest of New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson after Anderson and his lawyer failed to appear in a Florida court Tuesday, multiple media outlets reported. Anderson was scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing stemming from his arrest in January for reckless driving. Ed O’Donnell, Anderson’s lawyer, told The New York Daily News on Wednesday that he and Anderson received no notice of a court date. “I received no notice, Robby received no notice. And the bondsman received no notice. A written plea of Not Guilty was filed on January 29th,” Anderson said. “Since that date, we’ve never gotten any notice to be in court for this matter. I intend to take care of this (Thursday). First I got to figure out where it is. I didn’t even know who issued the warrant for non-appearance. Craziness. Craziness.” Anderson, 25, was arrested in Sunrise, Fla., after allegedly driving 105 mph in a 45-mph zone and running two red lights while speeding away from police. Anderson initially faced a felony charge of threatening harm to a public servant or family, but that charge was dropped in early April. Anderson is also awaiting an August trial for his participation in an alleged altercation at a Miami music festival last year. Anderson led the Jets in receiving last season, catching 63 passes for 941 yards and seven touchdowns....
    • Ex-Bears LB Freeman calls it quits
Ex-Bears LB Freeman calls it quitsMay 3, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Free-agent linebacker Jerrell Freeman announced his retirement on Twitter on Wednesday after six seasons in the NFL. Freeman, 32, cited “health and family” as top priorities and reasons for leaving the game following a difficult 2017 season. After three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, Freeman signed with the Indianapolis Colts in January 2012. He had a big year in his first season in the NFL, starting all 16 games for the Colts in 2012 and collecting 145 tackles, two sacks and an interception. Freeman had 144 tackles and 5.5 sacks in his second season, and he remained a starter all four seasons with the Colts. He joined the Chicago Bears in 2016, and started all 12 games in which he played that year, totaling 110 tackles. However, Freeman was suspended by the league for the final four games of that season for violating the policy on performance-enhancing substances. In 2017, Freeman suffered a concussion and pectoral injury in the regular-season opener, putting him on injured reserve. In October, he was suspended 10 games for a second violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Freeman had 10 tackles in the only game he played last season. The Bears released Freeman in February....

    • Bears reportedly won’t pick up WR White’s option
Bears reportedly won’t pick up WR White’s optionMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — The Chicago Bears will not pick up the option of wide receiver Kevin White, the NFL Network reported on Wednesday, the deadline for exercising fifth-year options on 2015 first-round draft picks. White has played in only five games in his Bears career because of injuries, which made it obvious that the team would not pay White a guaranteed $13.9 million for 2019 by picking up the option. The 6-3, 216-pound White, the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft out of West Virginia, has 21 receptions for 193 yards and no touchdowns during his career in Chicago. White sustained an injury to his left leg and didn’t play at all as a rookie, and suffered an injury to the same leg that limited him to four games in 2016. Last season, he started the season opener but sustained a broken left shoulder blade in the game that knocked him out for the rest of the year....
    • Free agent WR Wheaton signs with Eagles
Free agent WR Wheaton signs with EaglesMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who did not select a wide receiver in last week’s NFL draft, signed free agent wideout Markus Wheaton to a one-year contract, the team announced on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Wheaton, a third-round pick of Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013, signed a two-year, $11-million contract with the Chicago Bears last year. After undergoing shoulder surgery late in 2016, he had an appendectomy during training camp, a broken finger at the start of the season and a torn groin muscle in October. Those setbacks led to him making only three receptions for 51 yards in 11 games for the Bears, who released him in March. Wheaton’s best season with the Steelers came in 2015, when he had 44 receptions for 749 yards and five touchdowns....
    • NFL committee proposes new kickoff rules
NFL committee proposes new kickoff rulesMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Kickoffs will not disappear from NFL games in 2018, but they will look different. A group of owners, head coaches, position coaches, medical people, an active player and a union official met on Wednesday in New York and came close to finalizing new kickoff rules. The final draft is expected to be completed by the end of the week and presented to NFL teams for review on Monday. The owners will vote on the proposal later this month at their Spring League Meeting in Atlanta. “I’m optimistic we’ve made changes that will make the game safer,” said special teams coach Dave Taub of the Kansas City Chiefs. “It’s crucial that everyone was involved. “Football is at an inflection point. Either we make the changes we have to make to make the game safer or there will be negative consequences for all of us. Everybody realizes this is what’s needed.” Under the proposed rules, there will be no running start or pre-kick motion by kickoff coverage teams and no wedge blocks by the return team. In addition, there will be a 15-yard, non-contact zone from the spot of the kick, with the return team required to have a minimum of eight players lined up 15 yards from the ball. It is expected that the rules will take some of the bigger linemen off the field because there will be a premium placed on agility and speed to operate in space, and also eliminate some of the violent collisions often seen on kickoffs. Kickoff coverage is expected to resemble what happens on punts. “We want to preserve the play, and this is a big first step to doing that,” said Chairman Rich McKay of the NFL’s Competition Committee. Among those attending the meeting were owners Dr. John York of the San Francisco 49ers, and George McCaskey of the Chicago Bears; head coaches Anthony Lynn of the Los Angeles Chargers, John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens and Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and nine special teams coaches. “Overall, we kept the kickoff in the game and, I think, made it safer,” said Lynn, who played much of his on special teams. “That was the whole objective from my standpoint.”...
    • Jets GM Maccagnan says QB Darnold will get chance to start
Jets GM Maccagnan says QB Darnold will get chance to startMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — General manager Mike Maccagnan of the New York Jets indicated on Wednesday that Sam Darnold, the No. 3 pick in last week’s NFL Draft, will compete with incumbent Josh McCown for the starting quarterback job this season. Maccagnan was appearing on the Rick Eisen Show on NFL Now and after an early discussion about the Jets’ plans for Darnold, Eisen asked point-blank if the former USC star would be given a chance to be the opening game starter. “Nothing’s been predetermined one way or another,” Maccagnan said. “There’s a chance for anything on the table. Nothing’s been sort of set in stone in terms of how we’re going to do this in terms of a firm time frame. “But he’s going to have every opportunity and we’ll see how it develops going forward.” Earlier on the show, Maccagnan said: “We’re going to basically expose him to everything. We’re going to give him the opportunity to go out there (and learn) the position. But of course our focus is not necessarily to throw him into the fire until he’s earned it. “But we’re very excited about him and his upside potential. … He’s going to have every opportunity to go out there and hopefully fulfill every potential we see in him.” The Jets were pleased with the performance of McCown, 38, last season, even though he compiled only a 5-8 record as a starter before sustaining a broken left hand in December that knocked him out for the rest of the season. McCown completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 18 touchdowns, with nine interceptions....
    • Steelers put LB Shazier on PUP list
Steelers put LB Shazier on PUP listMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Linebacker Ryan Shazier was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, which effectively ended Shazier’s chances to play 2018. Shazier will not count against the team’s 90-man offseason roster. The 25-year-old Shazier sustained a spinal injury against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13 last season and underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Dec. 6. Shazier made his first public appearance when he was in attendance at Heinz Field for the Steelers game against the New England Patriots on Dec. 17. Last week, Shazier provided one of the top emotional moments during the opening night of 2018 NFL Draft when he walked across the stage holding the hand of his fiancée, Michelle Rodriguez, to announce the Steelers’ first-round pick of Virginia Tech safety Terrell Edmunds. “That’s a huge lift, for not only him, but for us,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert told the team’s official website. “To see where he’s come from to where he is and knowing where he might be able to go, it’s beyond inspirational. It’s just exciting. It’s really exciting for him.” Shazier, the Steelers’ first-round pick (15th overall) out of Ohio State in 2014, has appeared in 46 career games with 41 starts, totaling 299 tackles (202 solo), seven sacks, seven interceptions, 25 passes defensed and seven forced fumbles....
    • Bengals WR Green denies problem with CB Ramsey
Bengals WR Green denies problem with CB RamseyMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green downplayed the existence of any hard feelings toward Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey months after the two traded blows during a regular-season game. The traditionally mild-mannered Green was ejected for throwing punches at Ramsey during the second quarter of a Nov. 5 game. Ramsey was also booted for instigating the fight after being told several times by officials to keep his emotions in check. “There’s no real beef,” Green said Wednesday during an appearance on PFT Live. “There’s no real beef off the field. There’s just two competitors. Got in the heat of the moment. Stuff happens. When you’re playing, it’s sports man. You know, tempers go crazy sometimes, and sometimes you can’t control emotions. I couldn’t control mine that day. “(I’ve) got to do a better job of that.” Green said that the situation should not repeat itself and the schedule makers would be inclined to agree since the Bengals and Jaguars do not play each other in the 2018 regular season. Ramsey told reporters that he got under Green’s skin by repeatedly reminding the Pro Bowl receiver of his stats during the game. Green finished with one catch for six yards. The constant barbs resulted in fireworks, as Ramsey shoved Green to the ground after the whistle blew on a 1-yard run by Cincinnati running back Joe Mixon. Green erupted, grabbed Ramsey by the neck from behind and slammed him to the ground. He then delivered several punches to Ramsey until a group of players jumped into the fray. Green had no prior history of on-field incidents and never had a personal foul before that game....
    • Reports: Broncos won’t pick up LB Ray’s fifth-year option
Reports: Broncos won’t pick up LB Ray’s fifth-year optionMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — The Denver Broncos will not pick up the fifth-year option of linebacker Shane Ray, who was their first-round draft choice (No. 23 overall) out of Missouri in 2015, according to multiple media reports. Brought in to eventually replace DeMarcus Ware, Ray collected four sacks as a rookie and eight in 2016, including three in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, he had only one sack last season as he battled a wrist injury and played in only eight games. Ray, who will be 25 this month, finds himself behind All-Pro Von Miller and promising Shaq Barrett. The Broncos also used the fifth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft last week to select pass-rushing specialist Bradley Chubb of North Carolina State. The Broncos weren’t willing to guarantee Ray $9.3 million for 2019, and could let him become a free agent after this season....
    • Gruden seems to have taken full control of Raiders
Gruden seems to have taken full control of RaidersMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Jon Gruden’s official job title is that of head coach of the Oakland Raiders, but a published report has him wielding even more power than that. Citing a team source, Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report wrote on Wednesday that Gruden has “effectively replaced” general manager Reggie McKenzie mere months after rejoining the franchise on a 10-year, $100 million contract. “Since joining the Raiders in January, Gruden has quietly consolidated power to the point where he’s effectively the head coach, general manager, CEO and just about everything else,” Freeman wrote. “No other coach in the NFL has this kind of power outside of (New England Patriots coach Bill) Belichick.” While Gruden and McKenzie are on record as saying they are in agreement on personnel moves, Freeman said that it is the former who has made nearly all of those decisions since returning to the team. Speaking at the owners meetings in March, Raiders owner Mark Davis said that it was Gruden’s team to build as he chose and that McKenzie was tasked with finding ways to make it happen. “Jon’s the head coach and he’s going to be here a while, so it’s important that he gets the players he wants and builds a team he wants to build,” Davis said at the owner’s meetings in March. “Reggie McKenzie is there with his staff to find the players and also keep the (salary) cap and everything else in order. … “He has built the team to where we are now and we’re in pretty good shape with the (salary) cap and everything else. Now he has a head coach who’s going to be running this thing for the next 10 years. His vision is going to be most important to building what type of team we’ve got.” The offseason has been a busy one for the Raiders, who have parted ways with wide receiver Michael Crabtree, punter Marquette King, wide receiver/kick returner Cordarelle Patterson and fullback Jamize Olawale among others. Wide receiver Jordy Nelson essentially replaces the 30-year-old Crabtree, who was scheduled to make more than $7.7 million in base salary and bonuses in 2018. Crabtree ultimately signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Gruden initially noted that the presence of Crabtree was one of the reasons that he was interested in taking the Oakland job. But the availability of Nelson apparently changed his mind. After missing the 2015 season because of a knee injury, Nelson had a big 2016 season for the Green Bay Packers with 97 receptions, 1,257 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdown catches. Nelson’s numbers declined significantly in 2017, when he had 53 catches for 482 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. Crabtree’s numbers also went down in 2017. After having 89 receptions for 1,003 yards and eight touchdowns in 2016, he slipped to 58 catches, 618 yards and eight scores last season. As for King, multiple media reports declared that Gruden had personality issues with the punter. A second-team All-Pro selection in 2016, King ranked sixth in the NFL in punting average last season at 47.4 yards per kick. King ultimately signed a three-year, $7 million contract with the AFC West rival Denver Broncos. Gruden will see King and the Broncos on two occasions this season as he makes his return to the NFL since coaching his seventh and final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He left the broadcast booth at ESPN to return to the franchise with which he spent his first four seasons as a head coach, posting a 38-26 regular-season record (40-28 overall) from 1998-2001 and guiding the team to two playoff berths, including appearances in the AFC Championship Game in his last two seasons. Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 regular seasons and 100-85 including the postseason. Gruden succeeded coach Jack Del Rio, who was fired following a season-ending loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that capped a disappointing 6-10 campaign for the Raiders. Davis said in January the hiring of Gruden culminated a six-year goal that started when his father, the late Al Davis, passed away in 2011. Al Davis hired a 34-year-old Gruden to be the Raiders’ head coach in 1998....
    • Elway on QB Lynch: ‘We are not kicking him to the curb’
Elway on QB Lynch: ‘We are not kicking him to the curb’May 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Denver Broncos general manager John Elway told reporters that he still has faith in former first-round quarterback Paxton Lynch. “We are not kicking him to the curb,” Elway said, via Mike Klis of KUSA in Denver. “He can still develop. When we drafted him two years ago, as I said, we knew it was going to take some time.” Lynch finds himself behind offseason acquisition Case Keenum in the team’s pecking order. In fact, the 24-year-old Lynch is bidding to keep that distinction by holding off Chad Kelly — the final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. “Paxton is going to compete with Chad for that backup spot,” Elway said. “We are not going to bring another one in for OTAs. We will take a peek at that. It will be those two and Case.” Keenum signed a two-year, $36 million contract with the Broncos in March. The 30-year-old Keenum posted career highs in completions (325), attempts (481), completion percentage (67.6), passing yards (3,547) and touchdowns (22) in 2017 with the Minnesota Vikings. Keenum started 14 regular-season and both postseason games last season while leading the Vikings within one win of the Super Bowl. The former journeyman made $2 million on a one-year deal in 2017. By comparison, Lynch has posted a 1-3 mark in four career starts with four touchdowns and four interceptions. The 6-foot-7, 244-pound Lynch has completed 79 of 128 passes for 792 yards in five career appearances since being selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft....
    • Giants add QB depth with Tanney
Giants add QB depth with TanneyMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — The New York Giants added depth behind quarterback Eli Manning on Wednesday. Journeyman backup Alex Tanney announced on Twitter that he is joining the Giants, who confirmed the move hours later. Tanney, who was released by the Tennessee Titans this week, joins 2017 third-round pick Davis Webb and 2018 fourth-round selection Kyle Lauletta out of Richmond behind Manning, 37, on the depth chart. The 30-year-old Tanney spent the 2017 season on injured reserve after breaking his left foot in the preseason finale. In addition to the Titans, Tanney also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts. He officially played in only one NFL game, completing 10 of 14 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown for the Titans in their 30-24 loss to the Colts during the 2015 season. Tanney played in 47 games for Monmouth College, with which he set NCAA Division II records with 14,249 passing yards and 157 touchdown passes. In a quarterback-heavy draft, the Giants elected to select Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick on Thursday night....
    • Roethlisberger ‘caught off guard’ by Bryant trade
Roethlisberger ‘caught off guard’ by Bryant tradeMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — Ben Roethlisberger told reporters that he was surprised that the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Martavis Bryant to the Oakland Raiders during last week’s 2018 NFL Draft. Bryant, who was traded to the Raiders for a third-round pick, had asked to be traded out of Pittsburgh in September only to change his mind. He recorded 50 receptions for 603 yards and three touchdowns last season and added a scoring catch in the team’s 45-42 playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. “When I heard about Martavis, I was like ‘Oh, man.’ I really enjoyed playing with Martavis,” Roethlisberger said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I think he was a great weapon, he helped our offense, did some great things by attracting attention and making plays for us. “I was kind of caught off guard, but teams have reasons for doing things. I think part of it was him expressing trade things that we all heard so much about. I think he’s probably pretty happy. For him and his family, if you’re in a good happy place, then good for him.” While the Steelers lost one receiver, they welcomed another in James Washington. The second-round pick joins Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster in providing weapons with which Roethlisberger can attack the defense. Roethlisberger played in every game in 2017 until sitting out the regular-season finale and earned his sixth Pro Bowl selection, throwing for 4,251 yards with 28 touchdowns versus 14 interceptions. He also became the first quarterback in history with three 500-yard games....
    • Titans agree to terms with S Lewis
Titans agree to terms with S LewisMay 2, 2018— The Sports Xchange — The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with safety Kendrick Lewis, the team announced Wednesday.
